The Protocol: Tezza Barton

Our series featuring the daily routines, expert advice, and beauty tips of industry insiders (read: those who’ve got it down to a science). Because we should all have a Protocol.

Most mega-influencers don’t create a photo-editing app that helps you achieve editorial-grade photos worthy of their own feed. Then again, most mega-influencers aren’t Tezza Barton, also known simply as Tezza. The entrepreneur is the founder and CEO of an aesthetic, and eponymous, photo-editing app: Featuring VSCO-like technology, Tezza lets you adjust your shots to dreamy, vintage-inspired effects. It's not just about making your pictures look as good as hers; she hopes to encourage users to "find inspiration everywhere."

It also gained the creative director (she's collaborated with brands including Dior Beauty, Michael Kors, and Tommy Hilfiger) and author (in 2018, she published InstaStylea guide to curating top-notch content) a spot on Forbes' coveted 30 Under 30 list.

Her advice to aspiring creators? “Find out who your inspirations are and try to recreate what they’re doing. If you love a certain photo, self-teach how to shoot in a way that sparks inspiration.” With 1.2 millionand countingInstagram followers, Tezza herself is just getting started.

Here, the Los Angeles-based entrepreneur talks about the benefits of morning rituals, long walks, and perhaps the most accessible beauty secret of all.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
First thing I do is drink a large glass of water! It makes me feel more energized, my skin feels plumper, and my digestive system starts moving.

Describe your morning and evening skincare routines.
I’m addicted to the Radiant Face Oil by The Feelist. I love starting my routine with that and using my gua sha. Followed by U Beauty Resurfacing Compound, Summer Fridays' eye cream, and Dr. Barbara Sturm face cream.

At night, I cleanse with Living Libations' oil cleanser. If I’m feeling extra, I use the Dr. Dennis Gross LED face mask. Then I use the Barbara Strum night serum, a hydrating serum by Drunk Elephant, and seal it with my Barbara Sturm face cream again. I also lather Dae Prickly Pear Hair Oil on the ends of my hair.

Do you have a fitness routine? If yes, what are your objectives/goals when you work out?
Fitness has always been a priority for me. It gives me so much energy to get through busy days! I try and make working out something I choose to do because it makes me feel happy. I never want it to feel like a chore. My routine definitely slowed down when I was pregnant, but I still made it a goal to walk every day.

When I walk, I try and get a solid five miles in; I feel like it’s the best way stay feeling healthy. When my husband and I have meetings, we try and do them on walks. I feel like my best ideas come then. And when I want to push myself and break a sweat, I prefer doing a HIIT workout. My favorite app to use is the Sweat app and doing Kayla’s workouts.

Who’s your beauty idol?
My mother. Her approach is less is more. She lives a full, happy life which I think is the biggest beauty secret of all.

What’s the best piece of beauty advice you’ve gotten?
Drink water! It’s the best thing you can do for your skin and the most affordable!
