The Protocol: Jennifer Meyer
Our series featuring the daily routines, expert advice, and beauty tips of industry insiders (read: those who’ve got it down to a science). Because we should all have a Protocol.
Few jewelry designers have made an impact, especially those with such a subtle and nuanced sensibility, like Jennifer Meyer. Since launching her eponymous line, the Jennifer Meyer Collection, in 2005, the Los Angeles-based multi-hyphenate (the mother of two also has her own scent inspired by her days spent by the sand and surf in her hometown of Malibu) has watched her effortless pieces grace the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, Reese Witherspoon, Meghan Markel, Kate Hudson, and Beyoncé, to name a few.
Every fine piece, like her trademark dainty evil eye and modernized nameplates, is still hand made in her LA studio, and Jen's philosophy remains front and center: Jewelry is more than an accessory. Created as symbols of luck, celebration, and love, wearing it is a way to reflect on life's milestones and moments and in turn, it becomes an extension of yourself. As of 2018, she has a brick-and-mortar store at Palisades Village where you can peruse her collection in person.
Here, the preternaturally cool designer talks about her favorite escape, what she uses to smell good all the time, and striking a fine balance.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
I try to do at least a five-minute meditation before grabbing my phone. I drink decaf coffee (I know—very controversial lol) and check my texts and emails.
Then I get the kids ready and take them to school. I love the ritual of school drop-off. They play me all the good new music and sometimes even ask for advice. After drop-off, I go straight to a workout; otherwise I will never get to it. Then I’m ready for the day!
Describe your morning and evening skincare routines.
In the morning, I take a shower and use my C & The Moon Body Scrub. Then I use lotion all over (I’m obsessed with moisturized skin). I use Jennifer Meyer Hand & Body Cream.
I like to use a vitamin C serum and U Beauty’s SUPER Hydrator; it’s my favorite. And, if I remember, sunscreen. The Multimodal Defender is so great because it not only protects me from the sun but even heat because I sometimes struggle with melasma. And always a spritz of my Jennifer Meyer perfume. I’m all about smelling good!
At night, nothing makes me happier than a hot bath before bed to make me feel clean and relaxed, and it’s also where I do a lot of thinking. When I get out, I wash my face with U Beaty’s MANTLE Skin Conditioning Wash.
Then, I often use the Resurfacing Compound and I also like Shani Darden’s retinol serum. I always end with The SUPER Hydrator. I also love Augustinus Bader; love their oil and moisturizer to throw in the mix. Then a lip balm. I pile it all on. I like to be very moisturized before bed.
I also love the Resurfacing Body Compound. It's literally the ultimate body cream. I use it every day when I get out of the shower and before I go to bed. It's so good for my skin and I swear it has evened it out.
What’s your diet like on a typical day?
I’m a big believer in balance. I try to start my day with lots of water, a coffee, and a green juice. For lunch or dinner, I try and do a salad of some kind or I love a fish taco—that vibe. I try and be as conscious as possible, but I find it pretty hard to pass up a good bread basket, a bowl of pasta, or a margarita.
What's the last thing you do before you go to bed?
Honestly, I say all the things I’m grateful for in my head. It helps me fall right to sleep.
Who’s your beauty idol?
My mom. She has perfect skin. No wrinkles. She’s never gotten Botox. Just water and moisturizer.
What’s the most high-maintenance aspect of your beauty protocol?
I like to treat myself to sessions with Nurse Jamie whenever possible. I love a lymphatic massage with Detox by Rebecca. I also love a really luxurious facial with Joanna Czech.
What’s the best piece of beauty advice you’ve gotten?
Drink water, use sunscreen, and surround yourself with people who don’t stress you out—it ages you 😊
What’s your 24-hour plan for getting ready for a big event or photoshoot?
I love to fit in a good workout. Sweating helps my skin and my mind. I try to drink a ton of water, eat pretty clean, and get rest.
Lymphatic massage is my splurge, but it makes everything better. Getting my hair blown out and makeup done always makes me feel somewhat put together.
Being near the ocean resets my nervous system, a walk with a friend always makes me feel better. I swear by Rebecca for a lymphatic drainage massage. The results are amazing, and I’ve never had another treatment come close.
Dr. Habib Sadgehi is so special to me and helps heal my mind, body and spirit. And acupuncture by Ellie. I’m obsessed. If I’m really looking to reset, the ultimate: Take me to Cabo for the weekend 😊
