The Best Body Creams for Dry Skin

The Best Body Creams for Dry Skin

This guide is written by the U Beauty team and includes our own products alongside others we think are worth knowing about. It is not an independent review. Prices and formulations are as of September 2026.

Why Body Skin Dries Out Faster Than Your Face

The skin on your body has fewer oil glands than the skin on your face, particularly across the shins and forearms. Its outer layer is thicker than the skin on your cheeks too, and it often spends the day in fabric and hot water. So it tends to dry out faster and stays dry longer, and one thin layer of lotion after a shower is usually not enough to visibly change that.

Two of the seven creams below cost under 20 dollars. Petrolatum, Glycerin, and Ceramides are cheap, and they work, so a low price is no argument against a formula. A higher price buys Acids and Peptides, which work on the appearance of texture and discoloration over several weeks.

We have compared these on formulation: the occlusives and humectants each one uses, the active ingredients underneath them, the size, whether it carries fragrance, and the kind of dryness it suits.

What Makes a Body Cream Work on Dry Skin?

Three categories of ingredients do the work, and a good formula uses more than one.

Occlusives sit on the surface and slow water leaving the skin. Petrolatum is the most effective one available. Squalane and Dimethicone are lighter occlusives. Shea and Cocoa Butter are rich emollients that add some occlusion of their own. None of them seals as tightly as Petrolatum.

Humectants pull water toward the surface. Glycerin and Hyaluronic Acid are the common ones, and Urea does it while also softening visibly rough, built-up skin. Dermatology references note that in dry air a humectant can pull water up from the deeper epidermis, where it evaporates, which is why humectants are almost always formulated under an occlusive.

Then there are moisture-barrier and renewal ingredients. Ceramides replace the lipids that hold the moisture barrier together and decline with age. Niacinamide supports the moisture barrier and helps soften the look of discoloration. Colloidal Oatmeal calms. Lactic, Glycolic, and Mandelic Acid clear the dead surface layer, which is what makes flaky skin look flaky in the first place, though they suit maintenance more than emergencies.

1. The SUPER Body Hydrator

The SUPER Body Hydrator is a body moisturizer built like a next-level face moisturizer. Squalane sits second on the ingredient list, with Shea Butter and a run of plant oils just behind it, so the occlusive and emollient base is genuinely rich.

What sits underneath that base is unusual for a body product. There are five unique forms of Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide, two Peptides, Beta-Glucan, and Panthenol, plus Glycolic, Lactobionic, and Mandelic Acid, the same acid trio in our Resurfacing Compound. The acids are why skin looks smoother over weeks of consistent use and not only softer on the day, and they are also why this is a maintenance product and not a rescue one.

So it suits skin that is dry and wants the look of texture and discoloration addressed at the same time. If your skin looks cracked, actively visibly irritated, or reacting to something, one of the plain moisture-barrier creams below is the better choice until it settles.

Key ingredients: Squalane, Shea Butter, five unique forms of Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide, two Peptides, Glycolic, and Lactobionic and Mandelic Acids

Size: 200ml

2. Osea Undaria Algae Body Butter

The richest texture here, built on whipped Shea Butter with Undaria Seaweed and Oat Kernel Extract. Osea publishes a clinical hydration figure most body products do not attempt, at up to 72 hours, and a third-party clinical and consumer perception study on 32 women reports visibly improved crepiness and firmness after four weeks. It is scented, with grapefruit, lime and cypress, so it is a poor fit if fragrance is a problem for you.

Key ingredients: Shea Butter, Undaria Seaweed, Oat Kernel Extract, Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline (DPHP)

Size: 1.7 oz and 6.7 oz

Fragrance-free: No, naturally derived fragrance

3. Nécessaire The Body Cream, Barrier Complex

The one to reach for if the skin on your body behaves the way sensitive facial skin does. It carries 5% Niacinamide and names five Ceramides, where the others here name three or leave the count unstated, plus Hyaluronic Acid, Colloidal Oatmeal, Centella, and Shea Butter. Fragrance-free, dermatologist-tested, and it holds the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance.

Key ingredients: 5% Niacinamide, five Ceramides, Hyaluronic Acid, Colloidal Oatmeal, Centella, Shea Butter

Size: 200ml

Fragrance-free: Yes

4. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream

Built around Colloidal Oatmeal at 0.5%, alongside Ceramides. Colloidal oatmeal is recognized under FDA's over-the-counter skin protectant monograph for temporary relief of itching and minor irritation due to eczema, so it is more than a marketing ingredient. The brand reports a doubling of skin hydration immediately, in an independent clinical study of 21 participants, and says the formula is designed to visibly strengthen the moisture barrier over seven days. It is accepted by the National Eczema Association. It works on the face as well as the body, and the range runs from 2 oz to 12 oz, which is useful when you want the same thing in a bag and a bathroom.

Key ingredients: 0.5% Colloidal Oatmeal, Ceramides

Size: 2 oz through to 12 oz

Fragrance-free: No added synthetic fragrance, though it contains eucalyptus oil

5. Kiehl's Creme de Corps

In production since the 1980s and still the reference point for how a rich body lotion should feel: Shea Butter for weight, Squalane so it absorbs without leaving a film, and Cocoa Butter in the small amount that gives it its smell. This is the one people finish and buy again for the experience as much as the ingredient list, and it comes in a refillable format and sizes up to a liter. Paraben-free and formulated without synthetic fragrance, which is a narrower claim than fragrance-free and worth reading as such.

Key ingredients: Shea butter, Squalane, cocoa butter

Size: 2.5 fl oz through to 33.8 fl oz, with a refill

Fragrance-free: No, though formulated without synthetic fragrance

Two Affordable Options Worth Knowing

Both carry the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance, both are named in dermatologist round-ups, and both cost a fraction of what is above them. If your skin is dry and you want the thing most likely to work, start here and add something else only when you want it to do more than hydrate.

6. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream

The default recommendation in this category, and it earns the position. The formula pairs Petrolatum and Dimethicone as occlusives with Hyaluronic Acid and three Ceramides, NP, AP, and EOP, three of the Ceramide types found in the moisture barrier itself. Thick, unglamorous, sold in a tub, and it works on most dry skin without argument.

Key ingredients: Ceramides NP, AP and EOP, Hyaluronic Acid, Petrolatum, Dimethicone

Size: 1.89 oz through to 19 oz

Fragrance-free: Yes

7. La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP+MAX

Formerly sold as Lipikar Balm AP+M, this pairs Ceramides, Niacinamide, and Shea Butter with Neurobioma, the brand's microbiome-targeted ingredient aimed specifically at the itch that comes with very dry skin. It is clinically shown to hydrate for 48 hours and the brand states it is suitable for babies from two weeks old, which is a useful shorthand for how gentle the formula is and the reason it tends to be the one bottle a household shares.

Key ingredients: Ceramides, Niacinamide, Shea Butter, Neurobioma

Size: 75ml, 200ml and 400ml

Fragrance-free: Yes

How to Choose a Body Cream for Dry Skin

Four questions get you to the right one on this list.

  • How dry is dry? Tight and dull calls for a Ceramide cream. Rough and flaky calls for something richer or an acid. Cracked and splitting calls for a plain occlusive until it closes.
  • Does your skin react? If it does, start with the shortest ingredient list you can find and add nothing else for two weeks. Fragrance is the most common culprit, and Nécessaire, CeraVe, and La Roche-Posay are all fragrance-free.
  • Do you want visible improvement over weeks, or relief today? Acids, Peptides, and Niacinamide change how skin looks over weeks of consistent use. They are not what compromised-looking skin needs today.
  • Will you actually use enough? A body takes far more product than a face does. A larger, cheaper cream used daily beats a better one used sparingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best body cream for very dry skin?

The SUPER Body Hydrator is the one we would start with. Squalane sits second on the ingredient list with Shea Butter and a run of plant oils just behind it, so the occlusive base is the richest here, and underneath it sit five forms of Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide, and two Peptides that work on how skin looks over weeks and not only how it feels on the day. If your skin is cracked or actively irritated, use a plain moisture barrier cream until it settles and come back to this: CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is the ceramide default, and La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP+MAX is built for dryness that comes with itch.

Cream or lotion for dry skin?

Cream, generally. Creams contain less water than lotions, so they are designed to leave more occlusive material behind on the skin. Ointments contain little or no water at all, which is why they need almost no preservative, suit the driest and most damaged areas, and feel heaviest.

When should you apply body cream?

Within a few minutes of getting out of the shower, on skin that is still slightly damp, so there is water at the surface for the humectants to hold and the occlusives to seal. Applying to fully dry skin in a dry room does less. We cover the other reasons moisturizer underperforms in why your skin is still dry even when you moisturize.

Why is my skin still dry when I use body lotion every day?

Usually one of three things: the product is mostly water and has no occlusive to hold anything in, you are not using enough, or something else is stripping the skin faster than the lotion replaces it. Hot showers, harsh soap, and dry indoor air can all do that. Fix the cause before changing the product.

Are expensive body creams worth it?

For hydration alone, no. Two of the creams here cost under 20 dollars and hydrate as well as anything above them. A higher price buys texture, scent, and sometimes actives such as Peptides or Acids that address how skin looks over weeks. That is a real difference, and it is a different purchase from fixing dryness.

Can you use face moisturizer on your body?

You can, though the economics rarely work, since a body needs far more product per application. Going the other way is often fine: CeraVe and First Aid Beauty are both formulated for face and body. Our own body range is built separately from the face range, and sits in the body collection.
