Since launching his eponymous line in February 2009, Prabal Gurung has established himself as a formidable (and multi-award-winning) force in the fashion world, one who's made us excited about getting dressed in a way few designers do, not to mention one of the most sought-after tickets at New York Fashion Week (when, you know, going to shows was a thing).
Born in Singapore and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal, Prabal launched his career in New Delhi before moving to New York, where he currently resides. Indeed, Prabal is a New York City designer through and through, and his ability to simultaneously evolve and inspire women to evolve their sense of style and self-expression is singular.
During a time that's inspiring a little more reflection than usual, we spoke to Prabal about the city as his greatest muse, tried-and-true modes of genuinely relaxing and why your most important relationship is the one you have with yourself:
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
I drink a shot of apple cider vinegar, hot water and lemon with turmeric and ginger, and then I meditate.
The last thing before you go to bed?
I go over the day that just happened and practice gratitude for it. Then once I am in bed, I listen to David Attenborough on Planet Earth. He has the most calming and soothing voice!
Your collections are exuberant and elevated yet wearable, often playing with are notions of femininity while redefining it. Where do you look for inspiration? How would you describe the Prabal woman going into 2021?
New York City is a huge point of inspiration for me. The kinetic energy here is so invigorating, along with the confluence of different cultures, art, food, music, social movements and people from all walks of life. As a designer, you are influenced by the world around you—and I am so lucky to have New York and the beautiful band of dreamers and misfits that inhabit it as a muse.
Tell us about your skincare routine:
My nighttime skincare routine is very extensive. It is the way I unwind and start to relax after a long day. I use U Beauty Resurfacing Compound, Tracie Martyn serum and toner and Clé de Peau cleanser.
“Self-care” is a phrase that gets thrown around a lot these days. What’s your personal definition of it?
I always say that the only truth in life is the impermanence of it. What is most important is the relationship you have with yourself and the impact you will have on the world. To me, self-care means practicing self-love and gratitude as these two things are the key to making every day as meaningful as possible.
What’s your favorite workout?
I love to box and do bootcamp workouts with my trainer.
What’s your go-to snack or favorite food?
Anything my mom cooks is my favorite.
Speaking of which, you’re very close with your mom, right? What’s the best beauty advice she’s ever given you?
That beauty starts from within. So if you love yourself and think you are desirable, this will project beauty to others.
